We provide a wide-range of services to our members including but not limited to: access to health insurance for sole proprietors and small businesses; the Energy Alliance, a program designed to reduce a company’s utility bills via bulk purchasing of energy supplies; tourism promotion services online, via advertising, by phone and at our visitor information booth; networking events morning, noon and after hours; advocacy at the local, county, state and federal levels; and much more. The Chamber helped create the Saratoga Economic Development Corporation and the Saratoga Convention and Tourism Bureau and now partners with these organizations and others to expand economic opportunity throughout the County.
According to Todd Shimkus, the President of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce, Saratoga County now has before it the “trifecta” for success with respect to the continued success of the region’s economy. First, the selection of a VLT operator at Aquaduct after a 10-year long advocacy effort means that the New York Racing Association (NYRA) will have the funds it needs to operate the historic Saratoga Race Track for years to come starting with a 40-day meet on July 22, 2001. The summer meeting in Saratoga is a truly special event that generates more than $200 million in economic activity over a 9-county region every year. Visitors come to Saratoga from all around the world to be a part of this spectacular event featuring the world’s best horses and jockeys in a truly unique venue.
Second, Saratoga County is now home to the largest commercial economic development project in the United States – GLOBALFOUNDRIES Fab 8. Building on the company’s heritage of developing award-winning semiconductor manufacturing facilities around the world, GLOBALFOUNDRIES is building the most advanced semiconductor wafer manufacturing facility in the world at the Luther Forest Technology Campus in Saratoga County, New York. Construction of the new fab, called “Fab 8,” began in 2009 and is on track to begin manufacturing in 2012. Approximately 1,400 new positions are expected to be created once the new facility is in full operation. As part of the ramp-up for Fab 8, GLOBALFOUNDRIES is growing its workforce and recruiting top industry talent from around the world.
Third, the Saratoga Springs City Center is nearing completion of a facility expansion that will expand its potential to attract conventions, meetings, and other events 365-days a year to downtown Saratoga Springs. The fact that this project has moved forward demonstrates that Saratoga is moving ahead with plans to grow its economy and to offer groups and corporations extraordinary facilities in an absolutely beautiful downtown. Within walking distance of a great many outstanding restaurants and unique shops and boutiques plus a wide range of museums, the City Center serves as a focal point from which people spoke out to explore Saratoga Springs and the entire County.
