Costume Drive Takes Spook Out of Spending for Struggling Families This Halloween

Halloween just got a little less scary for struggling parents who feared the cost of buying a new costume for their little monsters.

Comic Depot in Wilton Mall conjured up the idea of a Halloween Costume Drive in an effort to help the families served by Franklin Community Center, recognizing that the price tags on some of the festive duds might startle a family on a limited income.

Kristi Cararra, who owns Comic Depot with her husband, Darren, said, “I just had this crazy idea—I know how expensive new costumes are, and it would really be unfortunate if a child couldn’t dress up because his parents’ couldn’t afford one. And what do you do when your kid outgrows old costumes? Why not donate them to someone who can use them?”

The costume collaboration is a wicked idea for donors to help the community by dropping off gently used costumes to pass on the Halloween spirit, or folks can even purchase new costumes to donate, allowing local kids to experience far more treats than tricks, this year.

Costumes can be donated during mall hours at Comic Depot (near the Ruby Tuesday entrance) until Saturday, October 15th. “Shoppers” will receive an invitation through Franklin Community Center to browse the costumes on Monday, October 17th from 5-7 p.m. at the Comic Depot store in Wilton Mall. Those who find the disguise they desire can leave with it, free of charge. Shoppers will be limited to two costumes per family and must have the shopping pass with them in order to attend. Franklin Community Center will distribute passes to families accessing their services.

“This is such a fun way for people to get rid of their old costumes that they only wore once instead of just throwing them away. And the families we serve who really need them are going to benefit by not having to miss out on the whole Halloween experience,” said Bo Goliber, Franklin Community Center’s Coordinator of Development.

Franklin Community Center is a non-profit human service agency serving less fortunate children and families in Saratoga County for nearly 30 years. Comic Depot is a one-stop shop for everything comic books, with a vested interest in the local community. The two have been partnering for several years to make a difference.
