I met Chip Ellms, the owner of the Ellms’ Family Farm, in Charlton, at the Saratoga County Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Annual Dinner in October. While introducing me to speak, he told the 200 guests at this event that Joe Dalton, the Chamber’s former President, always purchased his locally grown Christmas Tree at the Ellms’ Family Farm and that he hoped this tradition would continue. So this past Saturday, my daughter and I traveled to the Ellms’ Family Farm to select and buy our family’s Christmas Tree.
The Ellms’ Family Farm is Agri-Tourism at its best. Even though Chip was out of town, his son Garth spent some time helping us pick out a tree. Beyond finding a great tree, Garth “highly recommended” that we also purchase a “magical” tree stand. To sell us, Garth promised that this tree stand would empower us to have our tree standing up and straight in our living room in ten seconds.
We arrived home with the tree and this new stand. We brought the tree in the house. We inserted the pole in the center of the stand into the hole the Ellms’ Family Farm staff drilled into our tree. We then simply lifted the top of the tree up until the stand was securely on the floor and the tree stood straight up – – in less than 10 seconds.
Later in the day after the branches had relaxed, we added the lights and ornaments. Three days later, the tree is still standing. We’ve been able to easily add water and to rotate the tree without the fear that it would tip over. It was a great buy and yet another example of why buying local can be great for consumers as well as our local economy.
