Congressman Scott Murphy (NY-20) and Todd Shimkus, President and CEO of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce, released the following statements regarding the selection of a new VLT operator for the Aqueduct Race Track, a portion of whose revenue will benefit the Saratoga Race Course, and the Saratoga economy:

“It is our understanding that the 3 leaders are moving this forward and they have given the green light to Genting New York LLC as the new VLT operator for Aqueduct.  This is great news for all of Upstate New York and the Saratoga economy,” said Rep. Scott Murphy.  “Racing is absolutely critical to the future economic success of our local economy and community.   It should not have taken this long for Albany to select a VLT operator, which left Saratoga families and businesses unsure of the future for almost 10 years.  Racing contributes so much to our economy, from the thousands of jobs it creates each year to the approximately $200 million in revenue it brings in.  Saratoga just would not be the same without racing, and I was proud to have fought to ensure racing’s future here.”

Congressman Murphy has worked tirelessly with the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce, and local business and community leaders across the region to advocate for the expedient approval of a VLT operator to solidify the successful future of the Track and the Upstate New York economy.

“I want to thank Congressman Scott Murphy for leading the way in working to secure support in Albany for the approval of a VLT operator at Aqueduct,” said Todd Shimkus, President and CEO of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce. “The approval of Genting by the Speaker and Senate Majority Leader this week signals an incredibly positive step forward for the future of our region’s economy. Congressman Murphy’s role in making this happen after nine years was substantial and decisive. The thoroughbred racing industry anchored by the Saratoga meet annually contributes between $178 and $212 million to our region’s economy stretching from Columbia to Warren Counties and everywhere in between. This is a great day for Saratoga County, for our historic Saratoga Race Course, for the future of this region and our entire economy.”
